Episode 205 – What Morals & Values Should You Instil In Your Children And Why? with Ryan O’ Connor

Siblings bicker and fight, right? A lot of the arguments are below the belt and that's accepted because they're siblings and they tend to know exactly how to really get on each other's nerves.

But what if one of your core values is respect? What if being mean to your siblings is not acceptable to your parent because it shows a distinct lack of respect?

And how does that desire to teach respect carry over to what is an acceptable way to speak to your parents, why you need to keep your room clean, and all the rest of life?

How do we, as parents, instil in our kids the things that are the most important to us? And what about the things that we don’t necessarily mean to pass on as values or ways of being, but do? Now those are the ones we get to feel really guilty about, right?

Even with the best of intentions and the clearest possible communication, what you say, what kids hear and what they make it mean can be three completely different things. We have no control over that as parents and having to deal with the fallout of our kids actually being human and making up their own minds about something can be quite confronting and upsetting!

With your friends, you have to treat them with a modicum of respect because if they decide they hate you, they're going to leave your life forever... [but] your family's stuck with you. So you're allowed basically to say whatever you want to them because they can't do anything about it. However, from the very beginning, I think you were very clear that we will just treat you and our siblings and ourselves and the world around us with respect."
