Why You Need To Jingle Your Spoons?

“You just need to jingle your spoons, Mum.”

This was Ryan’s response when I told him that I’d got off a phone call with a friend and felt exhausted. It turns out that there is a technique in psychology that uses “spoons” to define how much emotional energy a person is feeling that day.

It’s such a brilliant idea because it’s measurable and specific. There are none of the usual subjective measures of “I’m not feeling crash hot” or “I’m a bit tired” or “I don’t have the energy for that”. With ‘spoons’, you can describe how energetic you’re feeling (or not) and have the person you’re speaking to get a good idea immediately.

Ryan J O’Connor is a Geelong-based writer of original, alternative plays and prose.

He’s the co-founder and executive director of Someone New Theatre Company, the winner of the 2019 Grace Marion Wilson Trust Award for Playwriting, and an acclaimed actor and director throughout NSW and Victoria.

He is also an excellent baker, a trained stage-combatist, a terrible gardener, and a moderately talented poker player.

He does his best writing while trying to avoid his responsibilities, but loves to tell ‘alternative’ stories: romantic comedies about Death, coming-of-age stories about old men, and science-fiction tales about mythological creatures, just to name a few.
